Measuring Made Simple
eFRAME has made measuring more simple than others. Just follow the link which is appropriate for you below and get a comprehensive guide to measuring, helped of course with images.
Good To Know
You will need a tape measure, pen and paper
Always provide to us your measurements in millimetres (mm)
Some parts of the site give sizes in imperial meaurements (eg 10" x 12") because this is how some of our customers prefer it. However, when the order is placed these are always converted to mm behind the scenes
All frames have a lip which overlaps your item; the amount by which varies from moulding to moudling
We recommend you measure your item twice
To convert to mm from inches you multiply the number of inches by 25.4
To convert from centimetres to millimetres multiply by 10
Use a tape measure instead of a ruler for longer items
If you have numerious items to measure, keep each item clearly separated from the next
If your item is in a frame, we ask for you to take the item out and then measure
Measuring For a Frame Only (No Mount)
Make sure to double check the sizes are correct
before placing the order.
Please provide the physical size of the item
going into the frame. We will ensure the
frame is made to accomodate this size.
So, if you have a photograph to frame, and the
paper on which it is printed is 160mm x 250mm,
you input the sizes 160 x 250. Easy!
Even if your image is printed on a piece of paper
with a surrounding border, measure to the very
edge of the item.
If the item you wish to measure is already in
a frame please take the item out and measure
then. Do not measure the item whilst it is still
in the frame as this will give an incorrect size.
Please note that all frames have a lip onto which the glazing and artwork rests. This is to prevent the items falling through the front of the frame.
This means the visible size is slightly less than the physical size by about 5-10mm on each edge.
Aluminium frames can vary even more, so if you have any questions regarding an individual frame then please contact us.
Measuring For a Frame and Mount
Please note that we will cut the internal and external sizes of mounts to the exact sizes as shown in your shopping cart.
In the Design Studio you have full control over these sizes - no adjustments are made.
In the Product Page for any frame moulding, you have the option to add a mount. To make it easy for you, this page will automatically adjust
the opening to suit the artwork size given. If you want precise control, then go the the product page and click the "More options" link at the bottom. This will take you to the design studio with your design already loaded.
You should never make the opening the same size as the paper on which your artwork is printed.
The following guide explains...
If the artwork is printed to the edge of the
paper: It is usual to make the opening size
approximately 10mm smaller (5mm on each
edge - more for very large prints) than the
artwork paper size. This allows an overlap at
the back so you can attach the artwork to
the mount. On the image to the left we have
opted to show the maximum amount of the image
as is possible.
If the artwork is not printed to the edge of the
paper: Consider what part of the image you
would like to show through the mount. It is
usual to make your opening 8mm smaller than
this (4mm on each edge) Notice to the left we
have opted to only show the lions face and less
of the background than the other two images.
If the artwork is NOT printed to the edge of
the paper AND you would like to have a
bigger opening than the image: Enter the
exact size of the area you would like to show
through the mount.
As you can see to the left,
if your item has a border around the
picture, showing part of this through the
opening of the mount can look very
effective.

Measuring a Canvas
You must measure the canvas at its widest points. On stretched canvases this is normally the corners as this is where the folds are
Once the order has been placed we will manafacture the frame to fit the sizes provided
If you have a canvas on a stretcher frame you will need to measure the depth and then provide this measurement when you come to checkout in the 'Further Information' field. See our guide to dimensions below:
You may wish to opt for a deep rebated picture frame. You can find these frames by navigating to either the Infinity Collection, the Fast Frame Finder or with the Advanced Search Tool in the Frame Studio
It doesn't matter if the frame envelops the canvas or whether the canvas protudes from the back, we will provide appropriate fixings, but you must enter how deep your canvas is in the 'Further Information' box on the checkout page
Depending on the depth of both the frame and the canvas, we will provide either flexi points or spring clips
When ordering a picture frame which is intended for an oil canvas on a stretcher frame it is common to select no glazing
Please state in the 'Further Information' box upon checkout that the item you're framing is a canvas and then the depth of this canvas. If you don't do this we assume that the item is paper thin and flexi points will be inserted in the wrong position
If you have a canvas and its not on a stretcher frame then we recommend you order glazing. This is needed in order to prevent the item from falling through
