Some dos and don’ts for maintaining your artwork

If you want to ensure that your artwork lasts a lifetime, then you need to make sure that you look after it properly once it has been professional framed and mounted. Framing and mounting your artwork will obviously preserve your artwork and it is important to make sure that you get this right, but there are a couple of others dos and don’ts that are worth bearing in mind.

When hanging your artwork in your home, you need to consider where you are going to place it. You should never hang art if it can be in contact with direct sunlight, nor should you put it near any sources of extreme heat such as fireplaces or radiators. Sunlight and heat can cause the most damage to artwork. If placed in these locations your art can start to fade and crack over time.

If possible you should not touch your artwork. The oils that your body produce on your hand can be damaging to certain types of art so you need to be careful when you are handling it.

To prevent any moisture damage, you should use a picture mount to create an air gap between the artwork and the glass so that no condensation can collect and damage the artwork.
