Never frame without a mount

If you are framing a piece of art, you have probably thought about what type of frame you would like to use but have you also considered what type of mount you are going to use with your artwork?

All paintings, drawings, photographs or prints should be framed using a mount. In addition to making it look more decorative, the mount acts as a spacer between the glass in the frame and the artwork. This is of paramount importance to prevent mildew or mould on your artwork. Mildew and mould is formed when moisture is condensed because there is no air gap, which is exactly what the mount provides.

As well as considering what colour frame you are going to use you will also need to think about what colour mount you are going to use. The same rules apply for mounts as they do for frames. The mount should not overpower the artwork and is there merely to enhance the art.

Most framers would suggest that you use a neutral mount wherever possible. This is to prevent any clashes with the artwork and also to make the artwork itself stand out from the frame.
