How to choose the right frame

March 28, 2010
Posted in Picture Frames — Written by Andrew

Choosing a picture frame can be very difficult, especially if you don’t really know what you are doing or what to look for in a frame. There is such a wide selection of frames and mounts available that it can be a daunting task finding the right one.

There is a range of contemporary and traditional frames for you to choose from. A frame should enhance as well as protect your artwork. It should not distract the eye from the artwork itself, but should rather guide the eye towards the artwork. Frames and mounts block out everything but the centrepiece of the artwork.

Modern styles of artwork generally suit more contemporary styles of picture frame. Traditional styles of frame, which are ornate or decorative, suit a more traditional style of artwork such as watercolours or oil paintings.

The style and colour of the frame you choose will make or break your artwork and they should be chosen with care to ensure you have chosen the right style and colour. Coloured frames are very popular but the colour should complement the artwork and shouldn’t detract from the artwork itself.
