General rules of thumb when choosing a frame

It can be a daunting task choosing a frame if you don’t know what you are doing. This is why so many people use professional framers to do the hard work for them but you still need to make some of the decisions regarding the frame.

Firstly and probably most importantly, don’t choose a frame that is going to overwhelm your artwork. In other words, choose a frame that isn’t going to detract from the artwork itself. You need to remember that the artwork should be centre stage and the frame is there merely to enhance and protect.

Tell the framer where you are going to be putting the artwork. They may have a suggestion or two about a frame that would be suitable for different locations. A professional framer will be able to give you all the advice you need regarding your art and its frame.

You also need to remember that certain pieces of artwork require a mount. Check with your framer if you aren’t sure about whether yours needs one or not. Most types of art do need one and they are there to enhance as well as protect your art just like the frame.
