Framing your artwork

December 11, 2009
Posted in Picture Frames — Written by Andrew

Good picture frames can help an artist to get a good price for their work. An unsuitable frame can overshadow the quality of the artwork, which is why getting the perfect size and fit is so important.

Artwork is only truly complete when the picture is framed properly. Here are some tips on getting your artwork framed correctly.

• Choose the right material: You need to look for material that can preserve your artwork. The material should not contain anything that is acidic, as this could destroy the art later. Start by choosing mats- these separate the artwork from the glass and frame. You could even opt for glass with UV protection, as sunlight can make paintings fade.
• Choose the right frame: Many artists make the mistake of choosing either an over or undersized frame for their work. Tall paintings look good with sleek edged frames, whilst small paintings will look great with thick frames.
• Colour compositions. The contrast of the painting and the frame should complement each other.

Picture frames can make or break a piece of artwork, so it’s important that you choose the right frame carefully.
