Wimpole Hall – sunrise

With high expectations of a great sunrise last Saturday (5/5/2012), I arose nice and early and headed off to Wimpole Hall in Cambs and managed to get about a dozen or so decent images – of which this is one. All in all, quite a good trip as normally I struggle to get 3 or 4, even though I may shoot over 100.

A record number of entries indicates just how popular our April photo competition was. Thank you very much indeed for all of those who submitted their entries, some of which were just superb, and all of them a real pleasure to behold.

Of course, as we all know, farmers do not like people trespassing on their fields. But this was one place I really wanted to shoot, even it meant getting shot! Thankfully, I think he overslept that day, and I am still alive to tell the tale.

Well it was certainly a weekend of mixed weather we had here. Torrential rain dominated (meaning no photography!) but clearing on Sunday night to give a marvellous sunset.

The River Cam in Cambridge is full of canal boats, rowing boats, and punts. A pretty busy waterway that can make for some interesting photos.

The sky on the morning this was shot (21 April 2012) was particularly photo friendly in the blue hour before sunrise. The sunrise itself was magnificent with a huge fireball in the sky, and I managed to get some decent shots of that also which I will post up another day.

3 exposures blended together, processed in PS5 with Nik tools. But largely this is what the scene was like but rather darker.

Archway Framing Photo

Shot earlier this year at Anglesey Abbey, a National Trust property in Cambs, UK. The archway here frames the shot nicely and, without additional processing, there was a nice warm glow present in the final photo which added to the scene.

It seems from feedback that everyone really enjoyed it and so we think it’s right to do it all again this month  -  with even BIGGER PRIZES.

Wedding season is upon us, and here in the office we have been reminiscing about our special days.

We get lots of enquiries at this time of year for our beautifully carved swept frames, available in white, cream or silver, the perfect frame for your table plan – perhaps with a multi-opening mount.  Or how about a frame with large mount borders and no glazing, so your friends and family can sign it on the day? I wish I had thought of this on my day, I now just have a dusty book sitting in the back of the cupboard full of signatures and lovely sentiments that I never see.

I have just recently purchased a full length mirror so I no longer have to jump to see how I look at the bottom. I chose a beautifully carved wooden frame that looks great in my boudoir. Although my husband says he misses the comedy that was me jumping up and down trying to see all of me at the same time.

It’s great to be able to use the size guide to determine the best size of frame that I would need.  I am one of those people who are completely unaware how big, or small things are so if I hadn’t have had this handy little guide in the website studio I would have ordered a ridiculously large frame for its purpose.

Dining Room at Anglesey Abbey

Anglesey Abbey is a country house, formerly a priory, in the village of Lode, 5 ½ miles (8.8 km) northeast of Cambridge, England. The house and its grounds are owned by the National Trust and are open to the public as part of the Anglesey Abbey, Garden & Lode Mill property, although some parts remain the private home of the Fairhaven family.

The 1st Lord Fairhaven improved the house and decorated its interior with a valuable collection of furniture, pictures (and frames we hope!), and objets d’art.

Photo of the day: Here’s one to remind us all that British Summer Time has arrived, and that the weather is going to be beautiful today and for the rest of the week. Have a good one, but don’t forget to frame YOUR photos.

First Day of Spring (HDR) | Flickr – Photo Sharing!.

This was found outside a Houghton Mill – a National Trust water mill.

Although there has been a mill on the site for most of Houghton’s history, the original mill site (certainly in the time of the Domesday book) was approximately 0.4 miles along the river towards Huntingdon. The original mill pond is still there but now appears to be a natural backwater.

The present building was probably built in the 17th century, and was extended in the 19th century. In the 1930s, the mill was decommissioned. Local residents bought the building and it was given to the National Trust. After the war, the mill was in use as a youth hostel, and was one of the few YHA establishments where smoking was forbidden because of fire hazard.

In 1999, the National Trust put in new millstones. Flour is still being milled, and the building is a tourist centre, with a camping site nearby.

For the keen photographer, it presents many a photo and framing opportunity.

Well, spring has officially arrived, thank goodness! It’s time to shed those winter clothes, and take a look around your home.

I don’t know about you but with hibernating all winter, the house is in need of a good spring clean and a revamp. I haven’t decorated for a few years so with a filthy dog and, not quite so filthy kids, the house is looking a bit worse for wear and outdated.

Time for a change!

This includes my picture frames. I have some beautiful old pictures I inherited that are in some very old fashioned frames and so have been hidden away in the loft. I thought (especially since I work for a picture framers) it would be a great idea to get them reframed.

I have already started with a couple and they do look fab and are now up on display as they go with my new décor.

So go on, have a look around, find your old pictures, get them reframed and on display.

Quirky fact…! One of the earliest known picture frame examples was discovered in an Egyptian tomb dating back to the 2nd century A.D. where a fayum mummy portrait was discovered at Hawara still within its wooden frame.

This fact took me back to my holiday in Egypt and a beautiful Papyrus artwork I bought there that has been in the back of a cupboard ever since, as I couldn’t decide what to do with it.

Then I suddenly realised, why not frame it and put it on display?

It made me wonder how many beautiful pieces of artwork on unusual surfaces or with unusual sizes are tucked away collecting dust.

We can manufacture frames to any size and also have deeper profile mouldings which can take pieces that are thicker than your average photo/paper. So there is no excuse not to let it see the light of day.
