When browsing and comparing prices for frames, you may notice that there are sometimes large price variations. Sometimes, these may look unwarranted because one frame may look much like another but be markedly different in price. This page seeks to explain why these differences exist.

Commercial Factors

Transport

We source the lengths of moulding we use to manufacture the frames from many parts of the world, and from many different suppliers. Frame moulding that is sourced in Italy, for example, does not cost as much to transport as moulding sourced in China.

Supplier pricing policies

Different suppliers have different cost bases and so this is built into their selling price to us.

Exchange rates

As with any manufacturer using imported goods, we are subject to the normal fluctuations of exchange rates. These obviously vary according to the local currency of the manufacturer.

Availability

Frame moulding is no more resistant to the laws of supply and demand than any other product! If something is in short supply, the price goes up. This is not our choice, it is simply a reflection of the prices we pay from our suppliers.

Product Factors

Finish

There are several types of finish available for frames. The amount of work and/or capital investment that goes into producing these finishes can vary dramatically. For example, a “barefaced” moulding is a natural wood with no finish applied at all. Clearly this is a cheaper manufacturing process than a detailed leaf finish, requiring an extra, time-consuming manufacturing step.

Material type

We supply frames made from wood or aluminium. We do not sell frames made from cheaper plastic or composite materials such as MDF. The wood we use is from sustainable sources, and is of varying types, with each type being priced differently to the others. The aluminium extrusions we use are from Nielsens in Germany, recognised as the world leader in this type of product. This is noticeably better quality in terms of finish and strength than the light weight aluminium available elsewhere, and is generally more expensive than an equivalent wooden frame.

Profile

From flat, featureless mouldings popular with many contemporary photographers to complex, ornative and very decorative profiles, we have something for everyone. Needless to say, a flat moulding is much less expensive to manufacture than a highly detailed reverse profile.

Dimensions

The face width and depth (front to back) of the frame combine to make up the volume of material required for the moulding. It is quite often the case that if you are searching for a narrow frame, you may find a big price variation. Often this is due to one of them having a very deep rebate (the rebate is the inside depth of the frame). The prices are more obviously understandable when the face width differs – a 70mm wide frame is likely to be more expensive than a 20mm frame.

We recognise the increased worldwide environmental concerns over wood sources and the desire for greater controls along the timber chains, and so we ensure that we source 99% of our wood products from a supplier who holds PEFC Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody accreditations from BM TRADA Certification Ltd. These schemes provide assurance mechanisms to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are purchasing wood produced in a sustainable way.

Products carrying the FSC or PEFC labels are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. Chain of Custody certification is the unbroken path which products take from the forest to the consumer, including all stages of manufacturing, transportation and distribution. This means we can offer you the added reassurance and peace of mind about the source of the timber used in our products.

If you wish to be certain that the specific frames you are choosing are sourced from managed forests then please contact us and we will be pleased to help.

Never before has it been so easy for you to find somewhere to get your photographs, prints and paintings professional framed. The internet is a fantastic resource for finding all the frames, mounts and other framing accessories you could ever need.

Sourcing the right frame for your painting or photograph can be a difficult task but with a professional framer on hand to give you advice and guidance, you’ll be able to find the perfect frame in no time at all.

By having your artwork professional framed you know that you are going to get a really good service as well as excellent quality. The frame and mount are there to protect and enhance the artwork and your professional framer will ensure that this is done to the highest possible standard.

With the choice available when it comes to frames and mounts, you might have a difficult decision on your hands. You should however choose the frame that best compliments the artwork. The frame and mount should not detract from the artwork itself and it should guide the eye towards what is contained inside the frame.

Recently we were approached by Adam Dickens and his company t5media to frame some images he had taken on his recent trip to Africa for ZamCog (ZamCog is a charity dedicated to helping educate some of the poorest children in Zambia).

He needed these images framing for a fundraiser taking place on the 4th of February at the ROA Gallery in Pall Mall, London. The artwork was painted by the children of Shitima, and photographs documenting their struggles and hopes.

We were honoured to have been approached by Adam and were more than happy to help out to the best we could. As it was for charity we offered the maximum discount we could.

Adam recently sent us some pictures of the event and it looked like the evening was a overwhelming success.

There is an ongoing debate to which is better for your money, (especially that we’re in a recession) custom made picture frames or readymade frames? It all depends on what sizes you want and where you get it from. If you were to go to a professional gallery to have a custom frame fitted then it will be more expensive than going down to the local supermarket and picking up a standard sized frame. But if you were to order online the prices offered for bespoke frames are at more competitive prices. As there is no middle man when ordering online it means our prices can be half that of your local framers.

With commercial frames what you see is what you get but with custom frames you make all the decisions and have the final say on it, you have the chance to be very creative. Often the quality of the final product is higher than your mass produced readymade alternatives, so any extra money spent will be well worth it.

If you really want to make sure that you get that picture on the spot, custom made frames and mounts are your number one choices. Unlike readymade frames, custom made picture frames are something that can be considered as originally yours. Mass produced picture frames can’t be exclusively yours as for sure it will have a replica since they are made in batches. If you have a passion for art, photography and framing then buying a custom frame is not only unique to you but something to treasure because of its originality.

When you buy bespoke frames they are made to showcase the picture or photograph they are framing, not the other way around. Far too often we hear stories from customers that have been to people’s house and seen that the readymade frame and mounts just don’t fit the picture they are intended for. Why settle for second best?

That’s why at eFrame.co.uk we are as equally passionate as you are to achieving the perfect frame you deserve, we have over 600 different mouldings for you to choose from and with our state of the art website and unique Design Studio choosing the right one for you couldn’t be easier.
We all know the saying; “A picture is worth a thousand words”, so why not protect the memories you have for a lifetime with your very own custom picture frame today.

At eframe.co.uk we offer a service which we think is a little different. Like the typical high street framer, we provide high quality framing, but we generally do it at half the cost and in half the time. And because we are the UK’s leading online manufacturer, servicing 70,000+ (update: 100,000+) customers, we are able to buy big and produce fast, making the prices you pay considerably less than you might think.

You must be reading this and thinking: “This sounds too good to be true, there must be some catch?” – if you are then please don’t. We aim to give you the highest standard of frames, picture mounts and framed mirrors as possible, and all at direct, online prices.

Our manufacturing plant is setup to produce hundreds of thousands of custom and standard size frames each year. We charge no premium for bespoke frames, and we make a huge range of standard sizes too.
As we have grown as a company we have invested heavily on the best machinery avaliable on the market. This has given us the potential to service small and large frame and mount orders in short time scales.

For us, quality is paramount. We are members of the Fine Art Trade Guild, our Production Director is a GCF qualified framer, and we have professionals overseeing and assisting our production framers at all stages of manufacture.

Good team work by the excellent building crew has resulted in Stage 1 being completed. This means we now have use of approx 1500 st ft of mezzanine and the new offices – air conditioned no less, and very welcome in this hot (and we hope) long-lived spell of beatiful weather.

Stage 2 will start shortly on completing the mezzanine and erection of the new staff canteen.
